NFIA Results 2009

Making the most of opportunities in 2009

In 2009 NFIA supported 155 foreign investment projects with a total investment value of € 3.1 billion. These projects will eventually produce 2,870 new direct jobs, while ten of these projects have also contributed to the retention of 1,017 existing jobs. Therefore, the total result for 2009 in number of jobs is 3,887.

  2007  2008 2009
number of projects 155 182 155
investment in million of Euros 578 667 3,142
number of jobs 3,107 3,300 3,887

The exceptionally high investment amount for 2009 can be accounted for by the realization of two very capital intensive investment projects:

  • An investment of € 2 billion by the German energy company RWE in a coal-fired power station in the Eemshaven

  • An investment of € 670 million by Neste Oil from Finland in a production facility for biodiesel in Rotterdam

Projects by region: more than 50% of projects from Asia
More than half of the 155 projects that the NFIA supported in 2009 originates from Asia. North America follows with well over 30%. The other projects come from Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Over the past 10 years the share of Asian projects in the total has risen from 33% to 53%. In view of job creation, the Asian share went from 18% to 42%. Measures to intensify acquisition efforts in mainly new growth markets like China and India, are beginning to pay off more and more clearly. China especially is starting to substantially contribute to the NFIA results.

Projects per country: United States good for substantial share in projects and jobs
Investment projects from the US made a large impression again on the results in 2009. Over 30% of the total number of projects comes from this country, accompanied by nearly 25% of the total number of jobs.

Activities
Nearly a third of realized projects in 2009 concerns marketing & sales offices, an equal share as that in the 2008 results. Of these 48 projects a quarter originated from China and a quarter from North America as well.
